Internet connection problem

I have an AMD K-6 3D with 184Mb ram, 56K modem, running Win 98SE with IE
6.0.2.... and OE6. Reloaded HD about 6 months ago. All seemed to be working
fine initially but the last 2-3 months I have noticed that after the
computer has been turned on for a couple hours, my internet
response really goes downhill. When I first start the system things
run well, average speed is 49kps and browsing is effortless. After 2-
3 hours however the response is very slow, often ending with "site
can't be found" or similar message. Watching the connection box,
data will come in little bursts then stop for several seconds or long
enough to fail.

For a time I thought my ISP was to blame as they have had some
problems at times and it was often around 11:30-midnight when the
problem occured but often turned computer on after 7:00 PM. Then I
found on weekends this happened earlier so I hooked up my laptop and
when my PC started having problems, went to the laptop and found no
problems with surfing. Tonight, to test theory, when the problem
began I restarted the computer, sure enough, all worked great again.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Any ideas what the problem might
be or what I can do about it. My preference would be to not
completely reload but I'm flexible if it will eliminate this problem.
Thanks,
DM Lewis

Did you try dumping your temporary Internet files folder?

Re: Internet connection problem

I hadn't tried this but will. Thanks for the suggestion, I always forget
about dumping that stuff. If this is the problem, is it reasonable that
restarting would relieve the situation for another few hours?
