| mouse freezes My mouse recently started freezing for a second or more at a time. Does anybody know what might cause this problem? It seemed coincident with getting my cable modem (although I don't see why) so I tried disconnecting the cable to the PC and rebooting and it still had the problem. I tried scanning with Norton anti-virus (and it claims it's up-to-date) but didn't find anything. When I look at Performance part of Windows Task Manager, there is no undue activity going on. Just now it showed less than 10% CPU usage. And while the mouse is unresponsive, the performance chart keeps rolling on (at the fast pace - 2 updates per sec, I think) - so the PC doesn't seem to be frozen. Any help will be appreciated. Jae |

Check that you are using the correct driver for your mouse, rather than relying on the ones included with Windows. If you are using Windows 98 or later got to Run on the Start menu and type 'msconfig' to open the Windows Configuration Utility. Click the Start-up tab and look down the list and check for any unfamiliar programs, try unchecking any you find, and re-boot, and see if that makes a difference, but only do it to one thing at a time. |

I agree, this could be the problem especially if the freeze is erratic, on and off. You may need to open up mouse and clean off all rollers of dust, debris and hair. You can use a tweezer gently. Is it an optical mouse, or a roller ball mouse. Or a field mouse? ;-) |

Or a field mouse? ;-) I put back the old roller ball mouse and it seems to work fine. So, either the driver for the Memorex optical mouse is interfering with something or the mouse itself is not behaving well. I sent an email to Memorex asking which of their many drivers I should download, but haven't heard back from them. Jae |

I sent it for repair and it was found that my 56K modem went bad. Didn't understand the connection between the mouse (cursor) freezing and the modem, but a new modem seemed to fix the problem. Jay |
