I just bought a western digital external usb 2.0 hard drive. Is it ok to
leave these things on (like computers). Or best to shut if off (unplug
it -since there is no switch) when I'm not using it?

It shouldn't hurt a thing. These WDs draw very little power when not
being used, and not too much during operation. It's probably better to
leave it running than turning it off and on all the time.

Ideally with external drives you would be better to shut them down when not
in use also i would be incluned while in use in the house or office to use
an eternal power supply as this device does draw up to 800mA of the usb port
as times thins is more than most mother board ratings ! bear this in mind

I always leave it plugged into the wall (it's own power), but usually unplug
the usb connection when not in use. I thought, given that there's no on/off
switch it would be ok to just leave it on all the time.
