I've heard some people say emachines weren't very good in the past,
but have they improved? They're machines are often priced similarly to
HP or Compaq. How can they compete if they are subpar?

The last eMachine I worked on wasn't any better than pervious models. If you
want a good quality per-fab machine, look at a Dell. Better yet, have a
local reputable shop build one to your specs.

well about 4 years ago i bought an emachine (i was broke and needed a
computer) at best buy and got the 3 year repalcemant plan with it...after 5
months i had to take it back...they said they didnt reapair them...so i got
a new one....a little while later same thing...and then it happened
again...finally i got one that has lasted about a year and a half...so they
seem to be getting a little better....but i am defianantly getting something
else when i get a new computer....but on the bright side i got 3 upgrades
for free =)
