Hi all

My grandfater has a P3 450 MHz PC with 128 Mb RAM running win 98 SE.

Recently it locked up while he was using it and now wont boot.

It will boot fine into safe mode so obviusly all the essential windows files
are still intact. if he tries to boot it into normal mode it goes as far as
the win 98 splash screen then goes back to the bios configuration table
(like some pc's do) and then stops.

the sticking point is, if i answers yes to everything in step-by-step except
loading all windows drivers, it boots fine. If i answer yes, it freezes.
is there any way to find out which drivers its loading before it gets to the
desktop so that i can isolate the missing or rouge file that is causing it
to freeze.

Was something installed recently?? (Hardware or software)
Was he on the Internet at the time?? (is your Anti-virus definition
files up to date as some like the Sven virus cripple Windows.exe
files)


If you are certain that you don't have a virus on the computer then
try this


1. Boot up into safe mode

2. Click Start > Run

3. type "msconfig" (without quitation marks"

4. Click on "Startup Tab"

5. untick everything then restart computer.

when computer restarts in normal mode gom through steps 2 - 5 except
at step 5. tick one item and restart the computer, do this until all
items have a tick next to them or until you encounter your problem
again. If you encounter the problem before all items are ticked just
boot into safe mode and untick the last item that you put a tick in.

When u restart if that works go to these site and look for the names on it
by using ctrl f and typing in the name this is a very helpfull site when it
comes to msconfig programs telling u what they are and it will give u a
description if u need them and it will tell u if it is a virus

I stuffed around with msconfig for about 3 hrs and had no luck.
My feeling is that its either in the win.ini or the boot.ini and not
the startup. I would try using bootlog.txt like wizard said but i
cant find it on the root of the drive (could it be anywhere else?).
any other sugestions?

Unless you have a lot of necessary files, sometimes just formatting
the hard drive and reloading, can save a lot of miserable
troubleshooting. I keep an extra hard drive on hand, which I can also
try, before formatting the original drive.
