MS Paint won't work

I am running Windows 98 and cannot seem to run Microsoft Paint. When I
click on Paint, this message pops up:

"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut
down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor."

Then if I click on Details, here's what it says:

"MSPAINT caused an invalid page fault in
module MFC42.DLL at 017f:5f40f9eb.

It hasn't worked for over a year now, but I haven't really needed to
use it, either. Any suggestions?

This is a known problem (Win98), caused by a problem in the important Windows
Registry files. Microsoft don't say how or why it happens but they have
published a fix.

It involves editing the Registry, which is not difficult, but do make a backup
first and follow the instructions carefully.
