Need help w/ Refresh Rate Annoyance... pleeease!

Ok, I am running Windows 2000 on a homebuilt computer with a Dell 17" CRT.
Every time I restart, my monitor will be running at 60Hz refresh rate. The
Advanced Display Properties menu will say 85Hz, like it's supposed to be,
but the OSD on the monitor will say 60Hz.

So I change it to 75Hz, click apply, change it to 85Hz, click OK. Then the
monitor will run fine at 85Hz... until I restart, and then it's the same
thing all over again. Anyone have any ideas??

Thanks a lot,
Martin

Re: Need help w/ Refresh Rate Annoyance... pleeease!

It sounds like your monitor has a hardware problem ... nothing to do with
Win2k... Perhaps an authorized Dell dealer could help? Is it still under
warranty? (you can tell by looking at the back of your monitor for the
manufacture date).

If it's not under warranty, these are the steps I'd take to isolate the
problem:

1) Get another monitor (preferably with the same refresh rate capability)
and see if it's doing the same thing

2) I'd insert a different video card that I know works properly and see if
you have the same problem.

Re: Need help w/ Refresh Rate Annoyance... pleeease!

Try changing the monitor in display properties .. advanced to a generic
1024x768x75/85hz one, set the rate and reboot.

also lol @ alt.comp.curses, we dont have that one but it sounds amusing

Re: Need help w/ Refresh Rate Annoyance... pleeease!

I'd suggest uninstalling the video drivers and uninstalling any monitors in
Device Manager. Reboot and install the video drivers and let Windows discover
the monitor again.

Yeah I have tried all sorts of stuff like that... reinstalling video card
driver, reinstalling monitor driver, etc. etc. I have even reformatted
since then (not because of this), and it is still happening so I am pretty
stumped.

If anyone knows what could be causing this, I'd love to know.

Thanks!

Go to Video Card vendor's website, ask for an update driver.
There is not a hardware program. By default, all video card refresh rate is
set to 60 Hz. Depended on your video card and it's driver, it could set up
to whatever you video could be.

I already have the latest video drivers. The card is a Radeon 9800 Pro
128MB so I don't think that's the problem. Thanks for all the help
everyone... anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks,

I have had the same thing happen with two different monitors... I'm thinking
it is probably the video card's fault, but I am not about to replace it.
Wondering if anyone else had this happen and found a fix for it... ?

Just a thought but have you checked the monitor driver as well as the video
card drivers? They are not the same. Sometimes even with both the correct
drivers installed you need the second party software to tell the video card
what monitor you have and its starting points.
