.net password and MSNBC website

I often watch news videos at MSNBC.com, but now it requires me to register
and get .NET registration. I think this is part of microsoft. Any
downsides of registering for .NET password etc.? I don't really need any
more spyware, adware or spam. I have enough. I can register with my yahoo
address if needed. I'd appreciate any advice.
