| SNAFU + FUBAR = BOHICA Since the 26th of September I have not been able to gain access to any of my emails, by that I mean nothing coming in and nothing going out. I can still surf the web, read and post in newsgroups, but not send or receive any emails. Twice I have had my computer in for repair, but the people at Gateway can not fix the problem, all they can suggest is that I buy a brand new computer and start all over again. My internet provider COX says much the same thing, try as they might they can not fix the problem, what makes matters worse for them is the fact that all tech support has to be done over the telephone. They do not make house calls, nor is there anywhere that I can bring my computer in for them to take a look at it. It took me well over a month to convince them that I was never receiving any email solutions that they claim that they were emailing me. As for my Norton Anti Virus system it is unable to connect to my Outlook Express, thus I can not send or receive any emails. It will cost me over $50 just to phone in this fact to the people at Norton, I can not email them, my email system is not working. What makes matters worse is the fact their is no postal address that I could send them a letter to. As for Micro-Soft, I can not email them, they have no telephone number that I could call them, nor do they have a real postal address that I could send a letter to. |

| Re: SNAFU + FUBAR = BOHICA Hi Do you have Outlook Express working, but perhaps not configured properly? | Re: SNAFU + FUBAR = BOHICA Your Internet Provider will give you the proper configuration for incoming and outgoing mail, etc. Tech support ought to be able to talk you through it. curmudgeon wrote: > It would appear so, but how do I correct this problem ? > > "Mae T" <silver_streak@shaw.ca> wrote in message > news:3FC02742.16A43CAD@shaw.ca... > Hi > Do you have Outlook Express working, but perhaps not configured properly? > Mae |

| Re: SNAFU + FUBAR = BOHICA At one time I had a provider which utilized three different local dialup numbers. One local backbone provider, 'Starnet' would not allow my Outlook Express to function, because of an anti-spam policy which they enforced. UUnet worked, as did the other. The IT people at the internet provider were clueless and I had to research it myself. The last straw was when they dropped the two local backbone providers that worked and kept the lousy one. A friend of mine once said: A little problem, to a small company is a big problem. He was right. You could try downloading Netzero and try their ten hours a month free plan. It supports Outlook email. Joi works too, cheap but not free. Just remember though, you are more susceptible to get a computer virus using Outlook, than some form of webmail. Yahoo has free webmail and has virus scan protection for attachments. Lastly, do you have the abilty through your provider to view email as webmail too? Web mail resides on their server. If you use Outlook, it takes it from their server and plops it onto your hard drive. Some providers like MSN had dropped POP3 type Outlook email and forced everyone to use their Hotmail-type web mail. Something to certainly ask about. I have a hunch unless you deleted some key element, the problem is not of your making. Mine certainly wasn't. Formatting the hard drive, so you can reload all of your software, typically requires a boot disk on a floppy for older systems. Then you need the CD for the operating system. Such as Windows 98 or whatever. You will loose everything you saved, but do have a fresh start. Some sound cards, modems, video cards, etc. are not supported by the OS CD. See what is now listed in the device manager under control panel, then systems. Write them down. Drivers can usually be found on driverguide.com Get them first before you format the hard drive. While there are a lot of other factors which enter in...these are some of the basics for most systems. Good Luck, KK |

| Re: SNAFU + FUBAR = BOHICA OK, I looked at the COX homepage at: http://www.cox-internet.com If this is the same Cox that you have, they do have webmail too. Just enter your user name and password. You should be able to read and send your email, just not through Outlook Express until you fix it. Follow the instructions for setting up the POP3 too and see if Outlook works. Their instructions are good, but they do mention possible problems with Norton. If you can remove Norton through the add/remove programs, it may help. You can reload it later. Click: My Computer, Control Panel, Add/Remove programs. I understand your frustration, but you need to get back to the basics first. As mentioned earlier, webmail stays on their server. It can typically be viewed from ANY computer while connected to the internet. At work, your friends house, etc. Enter your password etc. and you can read it. If you get the Outlook Express working, it will download all email sitting on their server, to your computer's hard drive. You will not be able to see that SAME mail in webmail any longer. Repost here, so we can see what transpired. KK |
