Help comp crash

I have a computer that crashed a while back. Can someone please tell me
what's wrong and can I save it. Here is a list of problems:

1) The resolution is off, so now I have big icons and half of them aren't
even on the screen because they don't fit.

2) I have no mouse controll, so the only way I can navigate is by using the
windows symbol on the keyboard to bring up the start menu, and using the
tab, up and down keys.

3) I have lost the ability to read or send information to my cd burner. It's
almost like the burner doesn't exist.

4) I also have no use of any of the usb ports, or printer ports. I cant send
any information out of the computer.

5) the only thing that works is the keyboard and the floppy drive, but the
floppy drive doesn't hold enough info to make it useful in transferring info
to my new computer.

Do I have a software, hardware or virus problem? Any help will be greatly
apreciated.

Re: Help comp crash

What was the nature of the crash because it sounds to me like windows has
simply dumped everything that was in memory anywhere on the HDD and gone
kaput.

Is there anything of great importance on the computer (ie personal documents
etc) because i would advise that you back all that up (or what you
desperately need anyway) onto floppies and format the hard drive and start
from scratch.

If you need help with formatting, installing windows etc just post back and
im sure most people in this group will be happy to help

Sounds like windows has gone into 'Safe" mode in which it does not
load any unecessary drivers or files (including high resolution video
drivers). Restart the computer and before you see the windows logo try
hitting F8 repeatedly until you get a menu. Select 'Normal Startup'
from the menu and see if that helps. Good Luck.
