| Modem Help I have an IBM 300pl computer. I formatted the hard drive, installed Windows 98. It works fine. I installed Internet Explorer, but I can`t dial up my modem. It says "Modem is busy or not turned on" "can`t find modem, may not be hooked up or installed properly" This computer has an internal modem. During the instillation wizard, it had me choose from a list of what modem I have. I don`t know what one I have. Does any one know what modem comes with the IBM 300pl? Is it in COM:1 or COM:2 ? Thanks to anyone that can help. Also is there a patch I need to download that will work for Windows 98? It used to have NT 4.0 Thanks ....mfat |

| Re: Modem Help Go to this site: http://www-1.ibm.com/support/all_download_drivers.html and enter the information asked. If you have the original modem that came with the PC, you should find a driver there. You had to choose from a list, most likely, because Win98 did not have a driver for it. I ran into the same problem with the 300 series computers I bought for my kids when I installed 98. Hope this helps "Mfatoldsun" <Mfatoldsun@PinkFloyd.com> wrote in message news:XESrb.19375$vq6.4668@newssvr33.news.prodigy.c om... > I have an IBM 300pl computer. | Re: Modem Help Mike, I installed Belarc Advisor and it says that my computer is: PC IBM 300pl Model 6862 27U 128 MB Mem. For the Modems, IBM 14.4 Data Fax with DAA PCMCIA IBM 2400-9600 I installed the listed modems in the "Connection Wizard" and still no luck. I also flipped them around because i`m not sure what port they are in. It still can`t detect the modem. I found a couple drivers I thought might do it, I downloaded them, installed them, and nothing changed. Is there a specific patch I should be looking for on the IBM page? It 'used to have NT4.0', and you 'formatted the HDD to install '98', right? Was this a government, or elsewise institutional computer? (I might get back to this later; or not!..) Your '98 CD will have a generic driver for a 56kbs modem. Specify that you seek same. *bt. |

| Re: Modem Help Hi, again... I looked on the IBM site, and there is no driver listed for your computer, the same results at driverguide.com. Since you have a 14.4 modem, it is very possible that the modem may be bad...(14.4 is pretty old) it wouldn't be the first time I've seen a modem go bad suddenly. I would upgrade to a new modem, dial-up modems are pretty cheap, you'll be better off in the long run. Sorry I couldn't help more. | Re: Modem Help First things first If you right click on "My Computer on your desktop the left click on properties then click on the "Device Manager" tab highlight the unknown device and click on delete. Restart your computer and Windows should tell you it has found new hardware (have your Win 98 CD in your CD-ROM Drive ready) When asked for a driver point it to your Win 98 CD. Failing this you will need to open the computer case and identify your modem from the numbers on it. If it doesn't give you a name like motorola but a model number this will be enough for a search on www.driversguide.com to get a driver. Most internal modems work from com port 3 which is a virtual port. |

| Re: Modem Help Hi, An external modem will work with your computer. They generally hook up via USB port. If you don't have a USB port, I would suggest getting a USB card and installing it in your PC, it's well worth it. I see you have decided to go wireless DSL, that is even better. | Re: Modem Help Instead of unplugging your game controller, you could buy a USB hub. It will plug right into your current USB port and allow you to connect 6 to 8 USB peripherals at once. If your game controller has a USB port on it you can "daisy-chain" the modem into it and they will both work without having to unplug one or the other. Your controller probably doesn't have this capability, though, but you may be able to get a modem that does. Take care. | Re: Modem Help Sounds good to me. I`ll do that. The external modem should come with a start-up CD right? I just hope instillation will go smoothly. I will get the USB hub. Makes perfect sense. The best solution is to fit an internal adaptor card with four or more USB ports. These interface directly to the PC's internal PCI bus. |

| Re: Modem Help LarryLamb may well be right, but after researching this issue, I could not find anything about it on the web, that doesn't mean he's wrong, though. Really, it comes down to what you want to do and how much you want to spend. A hub would certainly be the easier way to go, but I really don't know what kind of headaches it could cause down the road, I have never used a USB hub since I have four USB ports on my PC. Installing a card requires opening up the case, but that's not a problem either, if you aren't squeamish about dinking around inside your PC. As for your last question, yes, the modem should come with an installation CD. Good luck.
