| computer networking.....I am dumb as mud Hi there, I know nothing about networking 2 computers together. Actually I have 3, but want to learn starting with 2. I have 2 old 266's given to me with network cards in them allready. First thing I want to learn how to do is just have the 2 computers talk to each other, thats it, no internet. How do I do this? Any good newbie sites out there to learn from? Eventually I want to learn how to connect all 3 to the internet, then I want to learn how to make one into a server. Help!! Thank you all kindly Fred |

| Re: computer networking.....I am dumb as mud Here is the easiest way (there are many others). 1) buy a "UTP" Catagory 5 (or 5e) "crossover cable" of what ever length you need to connect both machines. For more than 2 you would need a hub or switch and straight thruogh cables) 2) On each machine, under networking, load M$ Client for Networking and the protocol "Netbeui". You must also turn on "file & printer sharing" 3) Make each machine a member of the same workgroup name, I believe the default is "Workgroup" so you will be fine there. Then make sure each machine has a unique Machine Name; ie Machine1 .. machine2 etc. If all is working as it is supposed to then you will be networked and eventually in network nehborhood each machine name will be there. Once you can see them then you must share the files on one machine for them to be seen and used on the other.
