sending control characters to remote hosts by telnet.

specifically, I need to send "^d" to a unix host, but my terminal
reads this as "end of transmission" and immediately disconnects me.
I'm sure there must be a way to toggle keyboard input:i.e., keep the
local terminal emulator from reading and acting on it, and instead,
transmitting it to the process running on the remote host, but I don't
know it, and I can't find any documentation on it. any help will be
greatly appreciated.
