pc shuts down randomly

Hi there

my computer shuts itself down randomly. Sometimes after 3 seconds,
sometimes after one hour or sometimes not at all.

i have norton AV and PFW 2003, i have tested my computer for the blaster
virus.

the problem started when i moved to my studenthome at the University of
Louvain, Belgium.
the university offers broadband internet to everybody (a LAN). Maybe there
got something in via that connection? But I think that network is very well
protected.

Or could it be the change of enviroment? Could it be the heat? My pc is
between my wooden desk and a wooden cupboard, just on the carpet floor.

please help me, because i can't trust my computer anymore...

thanks

Re: pc shuts down randomly

I think you have some of the possibilities already.

Computers are sensitive to heat buildup in the case
There is a fan on the main cpu processor(the AMD chip)
It cools the cpu. But there should also be atleast one other fan on the
power suppy unit, where the mains or power is plugged in, normally at the
back of the computer case. There could also be another fan which helps to
bring cooler air into the case while expelling the hot air out. Make sure
your fans are working. Open the case or have a friend do this. Clean out any
dust that is inside and on the fan blades while the pc is off and unplugged!

There may be air vents on the front of the case to allow air to enter. Keep
this clear. And keep the computer case about 15 cm from the wall. You may
want to set the case on wooden block off the carpet as well.

Next, you can run an online virus scan to check for virus or trojans. Here
are two links
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/
http://www.trojanscan.com/

The key feature of the Blaster is the 60 second countdown message and then
the reboot.
This affects only computers with Windows XP and 2000

Most important is to keep your Norton updated weekly. Also dont share files.
If you do share files, scan the file first with Norton.

You may need to temporarily turn off the Norton AV
