| returned e-mail i never sent. I'm suddenly getting batches of undeliverable mail that I never sent.Is some one spoofing my e-mail address and if so how can I stop it.I've changed my password but they still keep coming. Also I'm getting 2-4 Microsoft update e-mails every day or two since this has been going on I never open their attached update 'cus I'm wary of getting a virus so I just go to the web site and get updated there. Is this a coincidence or is it a symptom of something? |

| Re: returned e-mail i never sent. I was getting the same microsoft updates that had .EXE attachments and I deleted them because microsoft never uses E-mail for updates. | Re: returned e-mail i never sent. There have been multiple threads about this subject in this NG and in others, plus it has been all over the news. I am surprised you haven't heard about it already. But be that as it may, getting this email doesn't necessarily mean that you yourself have the virus (actually it's a worm.) It probably means that someone who has your addie in their address book has it, and it that's the case, there's not much you can do about it other than to continue to use your delete key. I've got AVG anti virus system ,a free download, should it detect this worm if I do have it? I have run the scan and no infected files came up. |

| Re: returned e-mail i never sent. I pulled this from another NG, Hope it explaines ALL. "Look guys, I don't know how many ways I can put it, because more than a couple of you are still complaining about the same problem in multiple threads. The fact that some of you are recieving tons of bounce-backs and infected mails DOES NOT automatically indicate that your machine is infected. Once upon a time, that *was* an obvious sign of infection, but no more. This virus/worm like many recent ones before it are known to FORGE the sender's address information. This means that when someone that has your email address on their computer, actually becomes infected, the virus may send out tons of infected mail to multiple recipients, and some or all of the messages could bear *your* name as the sender, EVEN THOUGH YOUR PC NEVER SENT IT. This obvioulsy makes it difficult to track down the TRUE orginating machine, because the true sending address is usually not used. So, by nature of this, it can be entirely NORMAL for you to see lots of bounce-backs for messages you know that you never sent, and after checking your machine for an infection. When you see that kind of bounce back, it is prudent to check your machine for an infection to rule it out, but do not be alarmed if the bounce-backs persist when you have verified that the machine is clean. | Re: returned e-mail i never sent. lately I have been having the same problem only I have been getting fake bounce-backs and microsoft updates containing (according to NAV 2003) the worm.Automat.AHB otherwise known by symantec as W32.Swen.A@mm Another worm that you could have picked up (like I did a little while ago) is the W32.Gibe.B@mm both are mass mailers and both attempt to kill firewalls and anti-virus software on the infected system. the following symantec page explains it all. http://securityresponse.symantec.com...swen.a@mm.html Hope this answers your questions Combrains |
