| my computer is so slow Can anyone give me pointers on why my computer is so slow? It takes a long time for programs to load. I have 256 ram, what else could be slowing it down......how to I find out if I need more RAM? Is RAM not the problem? All help/suggestions welcome! |

The only sure fire way of getting a PC back to its original performance is to reformat and reinstall the OS. That way, all the other programs aren't loading and bogging down your system. Yes, there are many detailed and time consuming ways to do this. Take it from me, this is the best way. I reformat my drive every several months. And of course, I do backups before I do so. Tim... |

| Re: my computer is so slow Nonsense! Any windows box can be made to run faster after a clean install. Once you load back all your apps then all of the crap that loads at boot is back anyway. Anyone who formats "every several months" knows little about windows and is a glutton for punishment. Tim Harden wrote: > > > Can anyone give me pointers on why my computer is so slow? | Re: my computer is so slow Post back with your problem and I will. You need to set your Usenet reader to quote the content you are responding to so that the readers know what you are talking about. Hmmm... So I guess my years at Dell tech support, my experience with PC's since 1985, owning my own computer consulting business and my current job as systems administrator for an insurance company with over 100 workstations and several NT servers doesn't mean anything. (Not to mention I have the stupidest users on the planet Earth who are lucky to find the power button on their computers). I suppose you're right. I don't know ****. Glutton for punishment? Ever heard of "ghosting"? I just ghost back a bare install of Windows with the right drivers and go from there. ****, I forgot. I don't know ****. Tim... |

[Reply]: No comment regarding bickering. Unless you removed RAM before this phenomena; scratch RAM as a likely culprit. Two possibles that occur could be (1): something as simple as defrag; or (2): a virus. Many virii sap resources; and if both actions aren't "to-the-moment", apply. GL. * bt. |

| Re: my computer is so slow RED your an IDIOT from what I have seen you post as replies if you have nothing to offer BUGGER OFF. Now to help kaputnick When your computer finally gets to the desktop click on "Start" then click on "Run" then type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) then click on the "Start-up" tab and have a look at how many items Windows is starting. Copy the above instructions on some paper and now you can uncheck some items in this folder. You can always go back and check the items again if they are required. |

| Re: my computer is so slow What version of Windows are you using? Windows 98/Me are not very good at memory management so they need help. More than 256Mb ram wont help much. Windows XP does a better job at memory management. 256MB is a minimum and 512 will make it run nicely.(depending on other factors like system processor, bus speed, video specs and hard drive speed and free space) MSCONFIG is a good utility to help clean up all those programs that load when windows starts. Heres a few links to get started with- http://www.3feetunder.com/krick/startup/list.html http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Running_items.htm http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/ http://pacs-portal.hostinguk.com/sta...tup_full.htm#D The idea here is to uncheck those programs you know you dont need to startup. These items take up system resources, which are used as Windows is used.Your system resources at windows start should be in the mid-80%. You can get this by going to Control Panel, System, and clik on the Performance tab for Win9x. mh "Kaputnik" <johnkaputnik******.com> wrote in message news:19811f95.0308290020.6d5ecb22@posting.google.c om... > Can anyone give me pointers on why my computer is so slow?
