ZIP drive: letter assignment

I have two computers; both running Windows 98B.

These computers both have a 1.44 floppy (A), and a Hard drive (C),
obviously.

Both computers have an Iomega ZIP drive. These computers are relatively new;
decent MB's, fast processors, lots of RAM, etc. Both ZIP drives are set as
Primary Slave.

Computer 1: sets the ZIP drive to letter B, and the drive works perfectly,
strange that the icon is a 3 1/2 floppy and the properties state the same,
but none the less, it works just fine.

Computer 2: sets the ZIP drive to letter D or anything higher that I desire,
it works ok as well.

I have tried everything I can think of to change the letter D assignment to
a letter B assignment. Investigated the BIOS, system properties, updated
firmware, consulted with Iomega (this was a mistake - if its not in the
manual then they don't know). Anyway...

I want to change the letter assignment of the drive from D to B. I have read
that this cannot be done; obviously it can be as I have another computer
that has B assigned to the ZIP drive, as mentioned.

There may be something I am unaware of, I know some stuff, but I don't know
everything, any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you,
Michael

Re: ZIP drive: letter assignment

I did this, both ZIP drives are connected the same way; on the same cable as
the Hard drive (C). I thought of that too.

Re: ZIP drive: letter assignment

That is strange. Hmm I think some tweaking programs (x-setup comes to mind)
let you change drive letters, but I'm not sure...I don't have it on this
computer. X-setup is free, so check it out.

Re: ZIP drive: letter assignment

Sorry I couldn't help. I use X-Setup a lot...lots of cool little tweaks in
there.

I'd like to tell you otherwise, but basically I think you're SOL! I'll
welcome any corrections; but the deal is: this is an OS issue (vs. Bios),
and once an OS "decides" which letter to assign to a drive it's Hell trying
to convince it otherwise. If functionality ain't broke, don't fix it. Btw,
you didn't note whether comp 1 and 2 are networked, but again, even if so,
see prior axiom!

If it's truly driving you nuts, try a true reinstall of comp 2; meaning from
floppy on up. Maybe on a 2nd go-round the "98B" OS will rethink.

Re: ZIP drive: letter assignment

A bit late to follow up on this, but I actually believe its a hardware
issue,

You can try moving the zip drive to secondary controller. But I believe you
will find the difference is in the BIOS versions.
You wont be able to change the drive from B. A & B are reserved generally
for floppy drives. For whatever reason, the bios recognizes this as a floppy
device. Newer BIOS would rcognize as an Atapi device and allow the OS to
assign it the C-Z letter.

I had seen this once or twice. But I think your relatively new computers
have older computer Bios's.
