I just realized that when my laptop is on AC Power and plugged in, the
screen is darker. But when it's running on the battery, the screen is
brighter. This is strange!

Not really, when not connected to AC it assumes you will need to see the
screen more clearly, you could be outside on a sunny day and need more
contrast/brightness. Indoors and AC connected you probably dont need such a
higher setting.
Just a thought.
