Angry I can't see my external hard drive anywhere in explorer

I have an external hard dirve linked via USB and for some reason I cannot now see it in explorer or with computer management. I have connected it also to my laptop and it is not being picked up. When I did a system restore it noticed that there was something wrong with the USB drive i had it connected to but hasn't recognised either the USB drive or the external har drive....can anyone pffer some advice please????
