Hi Guys, I have an old motherboard (Intel 845GL) which does not support SATA HDD and has a slot only for IDE. I recently got a 500GB SATA HDD from somebody and decided to try it out. Since i could not plug in a SATA HDD, i only thought it logical to purchase an enclosure that would help me connect it as a USB device. This enclosure is not powered directly by USB and i have to use a separate power supply for it. However, after i plug it in, 2 drivers get installed automatically. 1) USB Mass Storage Device - under Universal Serial Bus Controllers & 2) ST350032 0AS USB Device - under Disk Drives. Despite this, Under My Computer my new device that i would expect to see is not shown. i only have the usual 3 partitions of my 80GB Samsung IDE HDD. I'm not sure if there are more drivers that have to be installed or not because i dont get the usual pop-up on the bottom right that my device is successfully installed and ready to use, which i usually get if i plug in any USB device. i have even tried a WD 160GB external HDD and that works. OS - Windows XP SP2 Please help me get this sorted

Re: External HDD not getting detected by PC Hi there! If it's a brand new drive it may need initializing. Right click on My Computer Click Manage In the left pane, click Disk Management. Your new HDD should be listed there. If it's not initialized, it'll say so. Right click and select initialize. If it's not showing up at all/as the right size/is showing up but not initialized it may be a power issue, a problem with the caddy or the drive itself. You may want to try re-installing the USB drivers too. Good luck!

Try removing the jumper from your external hard disk, external hard disk must be set to slave. I think through this way, your external HDD caan now be opened and read by your PC.

Re: External HDD not getting detected by PC As far as I'm aware, jumpers on a drive connected via USB make no difference at all. The only time I've used jumpers is switching between SATA1 and SATA2, and to identify the primary and secondary drives on the same IDE cable.
