I'm pretty sure this is a hardware question, not an operating system question, but correct me if you think otherwise...
We have a desktop computer, built from scratch, running Win XP Pro (SP2). It has an internal multi-flash card reader w/ 1 USB port (
Black 52 in 1 USB 2.0 Internal Flash Card Reader for Windows or Mac, Retail Box at 3B Tech - Buy computer parts, notebooks, desktops, & home electronics), in addition to the USB ports built into the case and motherboard. We can plug USB mass storage devices (Cameras, MP3 players, USB flash drives, USB SD card reader) into any of the USB ports on the computer with no problems, except for the USB port on the internal card reader. When any of these USB mass storage devices are plugged into the interal card reader, the computer freezes instantly and requires a hard shut down.
We can plug our SD and microSD flash cards into the internal card reader and there are no problems, the data is accessible. We can plug USB devices that are non mass storage devices into the USB port on the card reader (game pad controllers, USB floppy drive with or without disk), and they are recognized and usable.
We have already returned the internal card reader to the company once because it would not even recognize flash cards. They sent us a new one with a note saying they found no problems with the one we returned, but sent a new one anyway in the interest of customer service - it is the new one we are using now and will recognize flash cards. We can't figure out why inserting only Mass Storage Devices into this one slot causes the computer to freeze. Any ideas?
