need help for screen resolution

So i have an annoying problem
While i am booting up my computer the screen goes black and a floating box says "not optimum mode recommended mode 1280 by 1024 60Hz" The problem is i cant change the rez because it is still in load up and wont get past the windows xp screen and the windows screen with the loading bar. The only 2 things i can do are bios settings and menu but i cant seem to change any rez from there. Any suggestions???
