I am thinking of buying a new PC for gaming but want to purchase the very best. What type of hardware should I consider?

The best == best performance regardless of the cost.

well if you put it that way...

1200 watt psu
dual Nvidia 9800GX2 cards in SLI
intel QX9770
4GB(4X1GB) DDR3 @ 2000MHz
Nvidia 790i ultra mobo

everything else is debatable

btw i know the skulltrail is better but I don;t believe it has SLI support so it's not the best for gaming

Go for Core 2 Quad or Core 2 Extreme processor,or you may even go in for the latest Core i7 processor.
