For her project, Stefanucci has two goals:
• To assess how Tablet PC notes, which can integrate multimedia material used in class lectures, compare with traditional pen and paper notes in facilitating student learning;
• To write a user manual for students that describes strategies for developing better organization and note-taking skills using the Tablet PC.
Pencil and Paper vs. Tablet PC
To complete the first phase of her project, in the Fall of 2003, Stefanucci and another teaching assistant (TA) took notes on each class lecture in Dr. Proffitt's Introduction to Psychology class, a large lecture course with 150 enrolled students. Stefanucci took notes with OneNote on a Tablet PC while the other TA took notes using pencil and paper. Both sets of notes were posted on the class website where students could view or download them whenever they wanted. Stefanucci logged how many times each set of notes was accessed and how many times each set was downloaded.
At the end of the semester, Stefanucci surveyed the students in the class to identify which set of notes they preferred and why. Among other questions, she asked the students whether they would like having OneNote notes provided in any of their other classes, and whether they took notes in class in addition to the notes provided by the TAs.
