| Houston schools look to learn from Tablet PC initiative A study to examine if Houston County High School students' use of Tablet PCs in the classroom would improve their academic performance has concluded the technology produced no real difference in grades. Instead of students improving their academics, the "Houston County High School Tablet PC Initiative: Impact on Students and Learning" report, released last week, found that most students instead got hung up on equipment failures and had bad experiences with the technology. The study also reported that teachers were frustrated because they had little technical support and no real training to use the devices. "Certainly, I would love to say it dramatically changed student achievement," Mike Hall, deputy superintendent of information technology for the state Department of Education, said Friday. "For me, and at the state level, we got extremely valuable information from that study. It answered a lot of procedural questions, and we did learn how to set up (projects like this) in the future."
