Another product gaining significant interest is the "tablet PC" -- a laptop that can double as a high-tech spiral notebook, said Klimek. Users can take notes in class by handwriting on the screen using a stylus.

Laptops have also begun to dominate the computer world because they have quickly caught up to desktops in speed and processing power.

"It used to be that if you wanted a laptop for the mobility, you'd have to sacrifice performance," said Case.

"Now, there isn't too much you can get with a desktop that you can't get with a laptop. Maybe just a little more (hard drive) space."
