The dog ate my PC

UVa. professor working to develop textbook of the future (By Patrick Hite,
On Campus)

Charles Grisham finds it hard to contain his enthusiasm when it comes to Tablet PCs.

Introduced to the public by Microsoft less than two years ago, Tablet PCs are, in simplified terms, a combination of a laptop and notepad.

But Grisham, a professor of chemistry at the University of Virginia, sees them as the textbook of the future.

He imagines teaching a biochemistry class and presenting a molecule to his students. But instead of just showing the molecule to the students on a screen in front of the room or on a handout, that molecule is downloaded by the students to their Tablet PCs.

"I'm envisioning 130 students sitting in class, and each having the time and opportunity to manipulate that molecule the way they want," Grisham said.

"The way that I show it on the screen might work for some kids, but it might not work for everybody. So I'm hoping when I put my version of it on the screen that theyll have the same one on their screen, and they'll play with it in maybe a slightly different way ... and learn as they're going."

Last summer I was fortunate enough to not have access to enough textbooks for all of the students enrolled. The publisher provided a student key to the book's website. As far as I know, only one student tried to print out the pages. Everyone else read the majority of the book online. The average student test scores were 85% for the chapter tests. In contrast, fall and spring classes earn an average score of 20%.

I'm not convinced it was due to the online access but the results were impressive.

Students this summer are reading the physical textbook and scores are still very low.

Maybe it is just an attitude shift of the importance of something being online versus a textbook.
