xThink MathJournal Released

It may be the wee hours of the morning, yet xThink is fast at work preparing to release its new product MathJournal in the morning. We'll get the download up on TabletPCPost in the AM. Here is a copy of the press release:

Friendly, powerful math tool ready for back-to-school

July 28, 2004 -- The first version of MathJournal, a user-friendly, powerful math tool for the Tablet PC is ready in time for students who are headed back to school. Early users term MathJournal's ability to recognize handwritten equations, "simply amazing."

The user writes complex math expressions in MathJournal and it generates numerical solutions, symbolic solutions, and plots. Part of the efficiency of MathJournal comes from the fact that, unlike traditional math software, MathJournal automatically recognizes the type of problem that you write and offers the appropriate type of solution. MathJournal can also store the constants, intervals, and functions that the user defines for repeated use.

One MathJournal beta tester said that MathJournal, "hit me like a ton of bricks with its 'WOW' factor." [MathJournal Reviewed by John Dean, MVP, www.thetabletpc.net/reviews.htm]

xThink President Dr. Lothar Wenzel observes, "xThink software running on Tablet PC makes learning and problem-solving more simple and fun than ever before." Wenzel believes that MathJournal makes it extremely attractive for educational institutions to adopt the Tablet PC platform. Today, as Tablet PC prices drop and hardware options increase, "a striking number of schools are aggressively adopting the Tablet PC. And we are pleased that many of them are already integrating xThink Calculator with their curricula, and now they'll have MathJournal available."

Only a month ago, the announcement of the MathJournal Beta Program drew enthusiastic response. Beta Program Director Holger Dillner states, "Our volunteer testers thouroughly assessed the front end of our product. They also shared their insight and experience with pen-based computing." Beta testers included engineers, educators, and students. Dillner adds, "Just as important, the Beta testers wrote hundreds of test problems in their own hand and really put our recognizers to the test. We believe the testers will be pleased to see that xThink developers were able to integrate much of their input and wishes in the released version of MathJournal."

The product recognizes the numerical expressions that the user writes, and automatically solves the recognized problem. Users can edit their work; copying portions of the previous problems and reusing them in new calculations. MathJournal uses the Ink data type, the standard data type for Windows Tablet PCs. Users can draw and annotate in MathJournal and copy and paste their work to other applications.

MathJournal is classified as a Class III program among Tablet PC software products because it emphasizes use of the pen and minimize or eliminate use of the keyboard and mouse. With MathJournal, mouse and keyboard disappear in favor of the more familiar and intuitive pen/paper, which has served human beings well for centuries. But now the "paper" also provides intelligence and computational power.
