Shortcuts on the Mac?

I have a couple of files that I would like to create "shortcuts" to on
desktop. Is there any way to do this on the Mac?

In windows it was reasonably straight forward - haven't worked it out on the
Mac yet.

If you want to have something clickable, you might write an executable
UNIX script.

1 navigate in the Finder to the location of the object you want to generate a
shortcut ('alias', in MacSpeak) from.

2 right-click (or, if you have a one-button mouse, command-click) on the
item.

3 select 'make alias' from the pop-up menu.

4 drag the alias to the desktop.

5 (optional) change the name of the alias to whatever you want.

You can make aliases of any object, a file, a folder, even a hard disk
volume, and you can place that alias anywhere you have permission to write
to.

IIRC it's worked that way for over a decade.

You didn't ask, but if you're running OS X 10.4 and want quick access to a
particular file or folder, drag that file or folder over to the sidebar on a
Finder window. You can't do that with disk volumes are they are automatically
placed in the sidebar and are there already. Or, if you're running any
version of OS X, drag the file, folder, or disk volume to the Dock.

Making an alias is as straight-forward as making a shortcut... and there are
other, even easier, ways of ensuring access to items so that you don't have
to clutter up your desktop.

What on God's green Earth are you babbling about? All he has to do is right
click on the item and select 'make alias' from the pop-up! Why on Earth would
he want to futz around with scripting?! And if he _did_ want to script
something, why would he do a UNIX command-line script when both AppleScript
and Automator exist? Get a grip, man!

Does that work with all types of "shortcuts"?

If one wants more powerful shortcuts.

More powerful, and easier in some cases.

Yes. You can generate an alias to any file/folder you can access.
Files/folders which are in folders where you don't have write permission
can't be aliased that way... but there's a reason why. And it's a non-trivial
exercise to use the UNIX command line to generate a shortcut. And, besides,
even with files/folders in folders to which you don't have write permission,
you _can_ use Automator and AppleScript. And it's a whole lot easier to do
so! Faster, too!

You're still babbling. There is _nothing_ which can be done with the command
line which can't be done with Automator and/or AppleScript, if you know what
you're doing.

Messing with the command line is easier than right-clicking the item and
dragging the resulting alias to the location desired? What drugs are you on?

But the OP didn't specify what "shortcuts" means.

You seem to jump to the*conclusion that it is an alias that was asked for.

There was no error - I merely pointed out a possibility.*You are the one
telling others what to do. If somebody else, like you apparently, is a big
fan of Automator and AppleScript, they can write about it. But you say one
"really has to know what one is doing", so it does not sound simpler than
UNIX scripts.
