What is the best OS for a G3 900MHz?

I've installed System 10.4.8 on a G3 900Mz iBook with 500MB RAM but it
seems to be a bit slow for some tasks, especially with wireless
networking enabled. If I purchase a copy of Panther will it run faster?

Nope. If anything, it'll run slower. Get more RAM - your computer will
love you.

I'm running 10.4.8 on a G3 400 Pizmo with 384MB of RAM and I find the
performance fine. It's use is with Appleworks rather than Photoshop,
though.

One can check if one needs more RAM by*checking if one gets to many
virtual memory pageouts during ones typical usage. This can be done in the
Activity Monitor, installing & using MenuMeters, or installing Xcode
(developer package) using 'vm_stat' from the console.

Re: What is the best OS for a G3 900MHz?

That has not been my experience
On many slower models, 10.3.9 runs faster than any breed of Tiger (10.4)
This is esp true for g3 and g4 slower than , say 800mhz
You should at least try panther

Cheers andrew

Re: What is the best OS for a G3 900MHz?

I only stand for the vrtual memory suggestion. - You quote as though I was
standing for the speed stuff.

But Mac OS X.4 needs considerably more RAM in order to run effiently. So
if your G3 has too little RAM, it will appear as though Mac OS X.4 is
slower than X.3.

What is the amount of RAM in the G3's you have checked this on?
