There is no best email program; each has tradeoffs. Further, there are
other email programs for OS X in addition to those two.

None of them. mail.app will import your mail and mailboxes. You can
export the addresses from emailer, and then import them into Address
Book.

I don't know of any email program that can import filters/rules from any
other email program because the formats are too different. Ditto for
preferences.

For Mac OS X.3 or earlier, I used Eudora - Mail there, I think is buggy.

For Mac OS X.4, I use Mail - it has nearly everything I used in Eudora,
plus it handles Unicode/UTF-8 very well.

For Eudora -> Mail, there is:

As I said, I don't know of any email program that can do it. The page
you cited confirms that as regards Eudora; if Eudora could do it, he
wouldn't have had to write that utility.

Further, the notes say that not all Eudora filters can be imported into
mail.app because mail.app doesn't have rules equivalent to some of
Eudora's filters.

And it doesn't import preferences.

Right, it is a separate program that is run on the Eudora mailbox
hierarchy. You don't need Eudora, only the mailboxes it created.

> Further, the notes say that not all Eudora filters can be imported into

I ran it, and all the stuff I ported worked.

> And it doesn't import preferences.

I had to do that by hand, among other things, setting accounts anew I
think, but it was not so much work.

Anyway, I am happy switching from Eudora to Mail under Mac OS X.4. The
Mail*under Mac OS X.3 didn't have all the features I needed.

As you said, one should think*carefully*about the features one is needing.

Another problem is that email program must work with the mail server. One
reason is that the mail*protocols are rather limited, so email servers may
have their*own extensions. Then the writers of email programs may decide
to not follow that, even if they are aware of the problem.*For example,
latest Eudora does not work with my mail server, so if I would want to use
an Eudora feature not in Mail (essentially only receipts), I must use an
earlier version. No problem with Mail, there.

But you had implied that it did import preferences.

The only incompatibilities I know of are that a POP3 mail client won't
work with an IMAP mail server (and vice versa), and some
security/password incompatibilities.

How/why do they not work together?

Generally, it seems to work fine. But it may not do that for you.

One filter feature lost was the distinction between manual and automatic
filtering. I had Eudora set up so that personal incoming mail belonging to
a list was sorted into the inbox, and after that, I just applied manual
sorting to get it into the list mailbox. This I cannot do in Mail.

> But you had implied that it did import preferences.

I do not recall exactly what the port does, as I ran it more than a year ago.

For me, the main thing was to get over the mail. My mailboxes were on
several MB's though.

There are some bugs. For example, Spotlight does not index email unless
one have had a look at it, which is tough with several MB's. There are
some other such problems.

Overall, it went fine. I do not want to do another port, though.

I think it was some of the latter that Eudora had.

Sending or receiving mail doesn't work. Eudora 6.2.1 works and 6.2.3
doesn't, or some version numbers like that. The settings are the same. I
do not know why. As I use Mail, I do not think it is worth to figure out
why.
