However, Apple releases OS X in two different ways: 1) Retail versions which are usable on all models 2) Versions that are packaged along with Apple hardware-- these versions typically do not work on other Mac models. So if you borrowed the copy of OS X that a friend got along with his (say) iMac G5, it probably won't work on your G4 PowerMac. |

There is also the fact that many installation disks will only upgrade your software from the previous version. So if your G4 is using 10.2 a 10.4 updater won't work. |

Apple's included installers (discs included with a specific machine) often check for that -- you can see it on the disc face. |

Thanks very much, Mitch and Hans. For general interest, here was my problem:‹ I have two machines, a G5 dual and a G4 Aluminium Powerbook. An early 10 came with the machines, I paid for a DVD of the latest pay-for version which I have updated as and when so I have 10.47 on both machines. Notice I must have had a "brain meltdown" or something when I typed my question initially. I asked if 10.4 would run on a G4 yet I am typing on a G4 Powerbook right now running 10.47. I must be mad. When I travel, I bring the Powerbook with me. Now, I am with a friend in another city who has a G4 desktop with 10.1 or something on it. Some sort of problem developed on my Powerbook. I wanted to run DiskWarrior on it. At my own desk, I just connect the Powerbook as a virtual firewire external and run DiskWarrior from the G5. Now, I wanted to connect to my friend's G4 and repair my Powerbook. But I didn't feel comfortable with 10.1 so decided to upgrade my friend's G4 desktop to 10.4 I grabbed 10.4 from alt.binaries.mac.applications. OK shoot me. I don't feel guilty because I have already paid for a legal disk. But I don't have it with me, it's 3,000 km or so away in my office. The download arrived ok, MacPAR Deluxe reported no problems, Split & Concat joined the parts and BOMArchiveHelper unzipped the four disk images ok. I locked the archives and burned four CDs using Toast. Verification worked ok. Then I tried to install on my friend's G4 on a spare partition. Insert disk one, click "restart and...cd is ejected. I could see no problems so that is why I asked my question, probably at 3 am when I was not the brightest. In the end I used Disk Warrior withy the existing 10.1 and repaired many problems. THanks again. BG |
