My iPod can't handle my iMac's reboot

My iPod works great. iTunes works great. When I plug in my iPod, it shows up
in iTunes, perfectly. However, if I subsequently reboot my iMac (with iPod
attached), when I relaunch iTunes, the iPod does not show up. The iPod
screen shows the "Do not disconnect." warning. The only choice I seem to
have is to disconnect the iPod, force the iPod to reboot, and then plug it
back in.

My iPod is a 60gig Color Display and my iMac is an Early 2006 Intel Core
Duo.

Thanks for any and all suggestions.
