| Security concerns Aside from the built in firewall and a antivirus program, what do I need to protect myself in terms of Mac security? Thanks. --------------- "Nashan. Thanks. > --------------- Currently, there are no real-world spyware infestations for Mac, and the widely-reported Mac-virus programs are trivial and not being spread in the wild. Despite media reports of 'wake-up calls' to Mac users, I suspect most are still not bothering with antivirus software. A firewall is a good idea, as is turning on auto-updates and spam-filtering in whatever email software you use. Mac-users are just as vulnerable to phishing emails as Windows users... care and common sense are the best protection here. Of course, if you have an Intel-powered Mac and are running Windows via BootCamp dual-boot or virtualization, then all the standard Windows security steps are required. |

Thanks. No. 1 is practice safe computing. Don't open suspicious e-mail attachments. Be very careful of what you download on P2P networks, they are rife with trojans (rife with Windows trojans at least. When Mac trojans pop up, they will spread there.) An antivirus program is not really needed, since OS X viruses currently do not exist. Other than the firewall, get into the habit of running from a non-admin account. Running all the time as an admin makes your Mac more vulnerable to an attack than by running as a non-admin. Save your admin account for the very rare task that cannot be run from a non-admin account. I almost never use my admin account. K. |
