| Q: Which Tiger Version for G5 Mac I have a G5 Mac currently running under Mac OSX v10.3.9. I plan to switch to 10.4 soon, but I'm a little confused about one point. One authorized reseller is advertising both 10.4.3 and 10.4.6, for the same price. (Also, they advertise one iMac for sale, supplied with 10.4.4.) Does 10.4.6 only include changes that make OS X run in the Intel-processor Macs, or does it have features not in 10.4.3 that are useful for G5 Macs? Or putting it more simply, which version of Tiger should I get? |

Updates between 10.Xs are free. It costs to go from 10.3.x to 10.4, but its then free from 10.4.X upward to any other 10.4.X. Buy whatever 10.4.X you want, connect to the internet and hit software update and you will soon begin d/l the necessary updater. |

If I need 10.4.6, it would be silly to buy 10.4.3 and download the updates, when I can simply buy 10.4.6 at the same price from the same retailer. The real question (or questions) is (are), what are the differences between the different versions, and which do I need for a G5 Mac? |

And the real answers can be had by reading the blurbs for each system update posted at the Apple download site <http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/>. User reports and other information is available at MacInTouch <http://www.macintouch.com> MacFixIt <http://www.macfixit.com> and other Mac sites. There's no general reason not to use the latest version on a G5, but it's possible that your specific software or hardware might have some specific allergy to a specific OS version. If that makes you fret, buy 10.4.3, apply one update at a time, and test it before further updating. To address your original questions, the 10.4.6 updater does not add Intel support to PowerPC versions of 10.4, and every system update includes bug fixes and security improvements that you're usually better of having than not. |
