hard drive space disappeared

I'm running 10.4.6 on a 1.25GHz eMac with a 80GB hard drive.

I should have well over 20GB of free space on my main hard drive, but
when I tried to download a small file it told me I only had about 3kB
left free.

The info at the bottom of an open Finder window says that there is zero
free, yet when I add up all the folders in the main hard drive they come
to around 50GB on a disk with a capacity of 76GB.

I repaired the permissions and checked the disk with Disk First aid, but
that hasn't helped.

Any ideas on how to find out whether there are hidden files somewhere
taking up space?

Peter
