| G3 iBook > Stylewriter II? Anyone know of a way to use my old Stylewriter II, or an old SW 2500, with my G3 iBook (Panther)? I have a Xircom USB-to-whatever it was adapter, but I'm not sure if I need drivers in the event it's possible to get this working. thanks for any ideas, Sam |

So even if you sorted out the connection, OS X would have no capacity to talk to the printer. Sorry, Matthew. |

Doesn't the QuickDraw printing model cause problems? Do they emulate PostScript via GhostScript or a Gimp-Print driver or something? Cheers, MK. |

This is a case where someone wrote a *nix driver for the StyleWriters before we had OS X. Someone later found that they could compile the source code in OS X. It does rely on Ghostscript. The driver communicates directly with the printer so there is no need for a serial backend to CUPS. There are 2 known packages that have put all this together. The one I cited and include on my website works and has a couple of AppleScripts to set up the printer queue on a serial port. The newer StyleWriters (4100, 4500, 6500) will work with the Gim-Print (Gutneprint) drivers. For a serial connection for these StyleWriters, you do need a serial backend for CUPS. That was changed somewhere along the 10.2.2 timeline and included in the 1.1.17 version of CUPS so that it works with Mac OS X. Apple does not include it in the OS as they don't want to have to support serial printers. I keep the compiled binaries of this backend on my website, however.
