difficulties: iMac G5/OSX Tiger

I am the recent purchaser of an Apple-Intel iMac G5 running Mac OSX
Tiger, and I have a few inquiries and grievances. If anybody could help
me out, I would be much obliged.

€ MT Newswatcher is unstable and stops responding almost immediately
after I open a new article window, so posting is like a race against the
clock. I don't feel like using shell newsreaders (although I'm forced to
use the shell for ftp,) so what's a usable GUI newsreader Mac OSX Tiger?

€ Text Edit is st0opid.. So is "Stickies"" for that matter.. For
some reason,, these programs have Tourettes with spaces and
punctuation marks.. To illustrate this behavior,, I typed this
paragraph in Text Edit.. Why would Apple ship something that''s
so apparently defective out--of--the--box?? Does Apple think that
its user base is so young and hip and postliterate that they
no longer have the need to *type**!?! What is a good text
editor that I can download for free that won''t stutter like
this?? On my old Mac my text editor of choice for 10++ years
was Craig Marciniak''s 'Saint Edit'', which had no features
besides 'Search'' and only had one monospace font you could
use.. I'm looking for a text editor on OSX that does that
much-- and that little-- and is **free***.
(For the rest of this post,, I opened up a ''compose email''
window in Netscape Navigator and typed it in there..)

€ Oh yeah, 'Mail' does the same thing... plus it constantly locks up and
fails to respond when I press the 'Send Email' button. Again, these are
problems my computer was having out of the box, completely nonmolested
by me. Frankly, I remember having similar problems with Mail when I
tried using it 3 years ago on my iMac.

€ One of the nice things about Mac OS9 was that in pretty much every
browser, when you saved a file from the web- say, a .jpg portrait of
Gabriel DeLaRochefoucauld that I found particularly captured his
inimitable wit and erudition- the address of this file was saved in the
'Get Info' box of the file. If I wanted at some future time to check
back on the site and see if they had added additional portraits of
Gabriel DeLaRochefoucauld, all I would have to do was copy the address
from the info box into my web browser. This was particularly useful for
direct linking from web message boards, for when the subject matter
turned towards the DeLaRochefoucauldian, as it often does, or when a
fellow forum member offers me a .jpg of Teilhard de Chardin in exchange.
Yet I have found *no* browsers in OSX that do this!

€ Why have I been completely unable to get Flash 8 to install? WHY THE
**** DOES A COMPUTER SHIPPING IN THE YEAR TWO-THOUSAND-SIX NOT ALREDY
HAVE FLASH INSTALLED!?! Another thing-- whenever I tried to open up the
video files that played unproblematically on my old computer- in this
case, computer simulations of Earth passing through the Perseid belt
that I downloaded from the NASA website- OSX would throw up a dialog box
that said- in effect- "Okay, like, I don't wanna be a bring-down, dude,
but I can't show you this video file because... ****in... I don't know
how, dude? So, like, here's this webpage with links to third party
software developers and ****? And maybe if you download all of it it
will help you view your video file or some ****?" THIS IS THE YEAR
TWO-THOUSAND-****ING-SIX! IF I WANT TO VIEW MY VIDEO FILES OF TERA
PATRI^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H THE PERSEID METEOR SHOWER WITH THE NEWEST
COMPUTER IN THE UNIVERSE, I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO RIFLE THROUGH CONFUSINGLY
DESIGNED WEB PAGES OF THIRD-PARTY SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS TO DO IT!

This is all, IMO, inexcusable.

Your complaints all seem valid, but you will receive nothing but scorn
from the born-again MacDroids in these groups for your lack of reverence
and pure awe at what Saint-Steve-of-The-West hath wrought.

A good text editor is TexEdit Plus.
http://www.tex-edit.com/

MT-Newswatcher works fine on my G4 -- are you sure there's a "Universal
Binary"? It's not running in Classic mode? Is there a Classic mode on
Intel Macs?
http://www.smfr.org/mtnw/downloading.html

Eudora may have a universal available by now for email.

You have to pay a two taxes to Steve to get QuickTime working properly;
you should try out vlc:

I've removed the alt.religion.kibology link; I don't want to post there.

Re: difficulties: iMac G5/OSX Tiger

Before you do anything else, I suggest that you find out just what you
have. It's either an Intel or a G5, not both.

That's because Newswatcher sucks.

Google Groups.

That's because they suck. "Stickies" in particular is not a real
application; it's a practical joke someone decided to pull a few years
ago. "Hey, Irv, let's distribute a completely useless app with this
OS and see if anyone notices!"

That's because Flash SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS.
And because Apple in a fit of sensibility decided it didn't want to
touch Flash with a friggin' boat hook. Nor should you.

Also it's because Macromedia/Adobe decided it didn't want to touch Mac
with a friggin' boat hook.

Mainly, though, it's because they fired Rone. Adobe sucks.

I missed that. I guess "G5" just looks like a Mac trademark. You're
right of course, it can't be both.
