| iMac DV won't power on Hi, I just purchased a grey iMac DV that will not power on. When the power cable is first plugged in, you can hear a "click" as if it's trying to do something. When I push the power button on the front, it will glow green for about half a second. A "pop" is heard from the speakers, as if the machine was trying to start up. The light then goes out and nothing happens. Future pushes of the power button yield no result. However, if the power is unplugged and then plugged back in the process can be repeated. After googling a little, I learned that the battery might be the cause. I removed it and it was dead. I replaced it with a good battery pulled from an old Apple IIgs. I let the computer sit for a few minutes then pushed the reset button that is near the DIMM slots. The result is the same. I reseated that card that is just behind the DIMMs. No go. I removed the RAM. No go. Anyone had problems like this before? Any suggestions of how to fix it? Thanks. Greg |

| Re: iMac DV won't power on I had trouble with my power button itself. The Apple tech said they had had a lot of trouble with this model of iMac. Make sure the power button isn't "catching" under the face of the computer. If you can wiggle it just right, (I used a very small flat blade screwdriver and worked around the button) the computer might boot. Then, use only the power button on the keyboard. Most sites said it was prohibitively expensive to replace the PAV. Is this still generally the case? I'm hoping they have dropped in price over the couple of years since some of the articles were written. Can I use a PAV board from any CRT iMac or does it have to be from another DV? I'm still not ruling out a failed OS X install. Some of the sites said that if the firmware was not updated prior to installing OS X, the iMac might not turn on. I bought this computer in a lot with 2 beige g3 333's and a power mac 6500/300. One of the g3's had OS X 10.3.9 and I'm thinking that the previous owner might have tried to install X on the iMac, as well. IIRC, the beige g3's weren't supported past Jaguar. If the previous owner knew enough to get 10.3.9 installed on a beige g3, I think they could probably get it running on an iMac DV. -Greg > >> Hi, >> I just purchased a grey iMac DV that will not power on. Already downloaded the service manual, and the once working unit has been down for over 2 weeks (yes - I know it still can hold a kick, but I've already discharged it - not a spark!). According to the seller, the new PAV/Monitor (with a lot of xtra bits: power button, sound stuff, etc ...) has never been used, so I'm safe (touch wood). Hopefully, it'll be resurected tonnight! Well, two pieces of good news: a) I didn't kill myself, and 2) The iMac is alive (as well!)! Had all sorts of challenges: I) Brittle plastics - bits cracking and falling off all over the place (especially the grey internal bits, and a black bit on the bottom of the tube that held a wind of copper wire! I improvised with plastic ties, and to my surprise, the screen looks fine!). Overall structural integrity of the unit - shields holding at 70%, Captain ... 2) Subtle revisions/differences in 'bits' - the airport antenni at the side (were bits of wire, now 2 pcb's), the power button board (new one only had 2 pins on led, and glowed white (!) replaced with old one: green when on, oscillating orange when asleep. The metal plate on which the mb is mounted is different - came with big metal 'hickey' ... Thought could have been the heat sink, but on inspection it didn't align ... 3) Heat sink - used thermal paste on bottom of aluminimum (?) plate and top of processor. 4) Don't squash the speaker cables - they don't like it and will make weird noises ;) 5) Video adjustments: the paint/glue/whatever that held all the yoke things in place were not holding - had to refocus/align all colo(u)rs. Fun. Not. That's all I can think of for now. Any questions? Post and I'll get back to you ;) Mikey Mike |
