| apple-tab / tab Hi Is it possible to use the tab button in the same way as Windows? That is, to be able to go from control to control on a pop-up without using the mouse? Currently I'm noticing that I can't move focus from some controls to others (like lists/drop-downs), and I have to use the mouse. Also, with the apple-tab behaviour, can I get navigate to, say, individual firefox windows? Currently it just shows one firefox icon instead of one for each window - is this something I can change? I'm using 10.4.2 on a "Dual 2.3GHz PowerPC G5", according to "About This Mac". cheers! dave |

Having done a (tiny) bit of programming with both Visual Basic for Windows and Real Basic (for Mac, Windows, and Linux), the ability to move from item to item in a window using the tab key is an option... programmers may remember to set their windows up to be easily accesible by keyboard as well as by mouse, or they may not. All too often, in both operating systems, this detail seems to escape their attention. It's more likely to be missed on the Mac, however, because that platform has always been designed for mouse use, where Windows (and many Windows programmers) still come from a mouse-less DOS heritage. =============================================== remove 'nospam' when replying |

I'll get to grips with this one day I'm sure :-P It still seems a remarkably labourious way to switch between visible windows. If they would only put all the open windows in the command-tab list, it would make a lot more sense (to me, at least). I noticed that with the F9 view, the positioning of the windows on the screen changes their position, in as much as you can't rely on the same key-presses moving you to a certain window... As Alan pointed out, OSX seems far more mouse-based than I'm used to :) |

Thanks for that! $20 just to get my mac to type hashes and give me access to my open windows? Seems a bit weird to me. I'll just memorise the ansi codes for the characters I'm missing and leave it at that :) It begs the question - if so many people use macs for web work (me being one of them), why isn't there a hash key? It's really annoying to have to use the mouse every 5 seconds, just to click one thing because the focus can't be moved with the keyboard. I can't open a new dreamweaver document just using the keyboard, and as a web developer that's the sort of thing that really slows you down. I found where Apple puts the hash key on the UK keyboard - it's alt + 3, which they've failed to mention anywhere :-P cheers! dave > =============================================== > remove 'nospam' when replying |

Why yes it is, Dave. Swap the command and alt buttons in System Preferences, then use Witch (http://www.petermaurer.de/nasi.php?section=witch). Configure it to sort the windows on "window activity order", and set to use alt+tab (which is now command+tab). Hey presto, alt-tabbing *exactly* like windows, but with a different look. > cheers! > > dave dave |
