Uninstalled Java!

OK, I'm sure this is an exceptionally silly question, but hey:

I'm a reasonable noob to OS X, having axquired my first Mac in October
last year.

I am using Mac OS X Tiger 10.4 with all current updates.

I have (for reasons I shan't go into here) uninstalled Java using the
utility desinstall. Spefically, I uninstalled the package
J2SE50Release3.pkg

Now I can't use Java or even run java applets. (This was not entirely
unexpected; what I did expect was that I'd be able to fix it easily).

Trying to install J2SE50Release3 results in an error:

"Unable to locate existing Java version on this volume"

I see similar results trying to (re)install Java131and142Release2.pkg

Ideally I'd like to restore things back to how they were without
reinstalling OS X from scratch.

Google has brought up nothing of any real help, hence why I'm asking here.

Can anyone make any suggestions?

James.

That good, eh?

Before I do that, does an OS X install wipe user home directories?
