Ipod driver for MAC OS 9?

Well, I bought a Nano recently, but didn't read the fine print about
requirements. I have version 9, not X and was wondering if someone happened
to write a driver so that the nano can be recognized on my powermac G4 with
version 9 MacOS.

Thanks,

Ken Shaffer

I believe you need a G2 iPod or earlier, along with iTunes ver 2.0.

(I have a 20 GB iPod G2 with a nearly-new battery that I could probably
be talking into trading for your Nano).

I doubt it. Mac OS 9 has been unsupported for years. It's past time to
upgrade anyway.

Re: Ipod driver for MAC OS 9?

Yeah, I know. Just have too much invested in current setup with 3rd party
apps which I don't want to have to pay for again. I got the nano loaded up
with songs via my work PC and sons PC. Go figure. Then I read you can't
even load on both! I suppose a file system matching the host system is
placed on the nano, NTFS or some such for PC and HFS for the mac. I'm a mac
fan, but I need interoperability to the windows world. Oh well, time for an
advocacy thread.

1) Most Mac classic OS applications will run fine in OS X's Classic Mode.

2) If your iPod is formatted as a PC drive, it can be accessed on a Mac
as well-- Macs can read FAT-formatted drives without additional
software, though access will be somewhat slower than if it was a
Mac-formatted drive.

If your iPod had been formatted on a Mac, it could be used with a
Windows system but would need one of several 3rd-party utilities
allowing Windows to read Mac-formatted drives.

3) There are some problems connecting an iPod to multiple iTunes music
libraries-- Apple isn't too excited by that sort of use-- but there are
workarounds.

Re: Ipod driver for MAC OS 9?

And you better get your PowerPC based Mac now so that you can run those OS 9
apps on it (as was stated: Most Mac classic OS applications will run fine in
OS X's Classic Mode.). However, once the Macs go all Intel, there will be no
more OS 9 period.

1: Macs can read FAT-formatted drives, so format the iPod for Windows
and use it on the Mac.

2: If you enable disk use on the iPod (via iTunes, even on Windows), it
should show up as a USB disk drive, even on OS 9 (assuming OS 9 has
support for USB disk drives. I think it does, although it may need a
software driver.)

3: Although one iPod can't auto-sync with multiple computers, you can
put it into manual-update mode. You can then use it on as many
computers as you want. Note, however, that you can only add songs
to, and delete them from the iPod. You can't copy songs off of the
iPod (at least not using any Apple-provided software.)

4: Unless you've got a really small amount of memory, you should get OS
X. If you don't have enough memory, seriously consider expanding the
memory and then installing X. Chances are that your apps will run
fine under it, and you'll be able to use modern software like iTunes.
If you have a program that doesn't work under classic, you can still
boot back into OS 9, using the "Startup Disk" control panel.
