| OS 10.43 has made some things worse. I'm pissed off. Ever since...well way back anyway. OS 7.55 I think it was, Scrolling and similar activities in windows has been compromised. For example, there is a latency, a time delay, in trying to move selected items in a window. Click to select, drag to a folder that might be up top out of sight. Wait for the folder to appear at the top of the window. Finger off the mouse. A new folder above the desired one will then sometimes pop into view and the files will drop into the wrong folder. Grrrr. I keep hoping Apple will eventually fix the jerkiness (pun intended) but no such luck. Seems the OS is always a little ahead of the processors in its demand for speed. (I'm using fast machines. G4 Powerbook 1.5 GHz and G5 dual 2 GHz both with plenty of RAM). Scrolling itself is fast. Sometimes too fast. But dragging is not fast enough. What I'm complaining about was there in OS 10.42 and it just got worse in 10.43. Here's what I mean. I use Show-as-List. Imagine I have a window open and there are many items in that window. I mean, say i have some folders near the top of the listing and many files under them. I might select some files and want to move them to one of the folders, no longer visible because it is up near the top. If I proceed to select a set of files, the OS is almost too fast in scrolling, making me accidentally select more files than I intended. OK fix that and now I have selected just the files I want. Finger off the mouse to end the drag-to-select then back on again so I can drag the group up to the folder I want. What's this though? I might wait minutes (or forever!) before scrolling starts. Sometimes the OS is simply not in the mood to let me drag the files up beyond the top of the window in order to scroll to and reach the desired folder. I am forced to let go the mouse button, choose "View-as-Icon" and fool around in unfamiliar teritory, moving the files nearer to the desired folder. This is a #$%^ing annoying bug in the OS that I wish Apple would resolve. Is anyone from Apple reading? I thought not. Oh and while I'm in grump mode...Up to OS 9, it was possible to selectively select non-contiguous files using a simple technique that is missing in OS x. Imagine I am again in the same window. Suppose there are some duplicate files so my list looks like this filename-555.jpg filename-556.jpg filename-556€02.jpg filename-557.jpg filename-557€02.jpg filename-558.jpg filename-558€02.jpg filename-559.jpg filename-559€02.jpg filename-560.jpg filename-561.jpg It used to be possible to select (preparatory to deletion) only the duplicate files by dragging in such a way that the drag-rectangle captured only the longer filenames. Not any more. Another thing that pisses me off. Can I make it three-in-a-row? Why oh why won't the command-F New Search window remember my last configuration? I don't often want to search for content. Mostly, i want to search for "Name contains". I have to re-make that selection every time. A waste of a few milliseconds and the dissipation of another milligram of my Apple goodwill. Just because OSX is better than OS 9 in almost every respect is not a good enough reason to sit quiet while some small and irritating things prevent it from being even better. But...does Apple care enough to include an email address for contact on their web site? Fat chance. Just like Adobe, Nikon and a few others, Apple's customer support in this regard stinks. |
