| move HD from one Mac to another I am thinking of getting myself a nice G5 to replace my trusty G3 B&W. The G3 has modern (= fast) HDs. Can I swap HDs from the G3 to the G5 just like that (and boot from them without any hassle) or is it not going to work that easy? Thanks - Robert |

The G5 uses the new Serial ATA (SATA) disks, and the G3's use the traditional Parallel ATA disks. You can get a PCI ATA controller for your G5 if you like. Or just get an external Firewire (or USB 2) external enclosure and put your G3's disks in the external enclosure and attach them to your G5 using Firewire or USB2. And with the external enclosures you can use them to move huge amounts of data between systems, or you can so what many others so, use them as detachable backup devices. Bob Harris |

Then you'd have to figure out where to put the drive and how to get power to it and how to route the IDE ribbon cable from the card bay to the drives. It's not impossible -- for example, Wiebetech has an expensive kit for adding SATA drives <http://www.wiebetech.com/products/G5Jamplus.php> -- but it isn't practical. The PowerMac G5 case is just not designed to accommodate more than two SATA hard drives. Get an external enclosure. |

Say Yes, follow the instructions to put the G3 in Target disk mode, connect to G5 by Firewire (your G3 has firewire?) and gives you the choice of what to transfers among: users + users' data, Applications, Other. Once the transfer has complete, your G5 will be like the G3 but faster... I did it last week from my iMac G4 to my lovely new iMac G5 20" :-) |
