OS X 10.4 compatibility with Microsoft Remote Destop Connection

I'm contemplating getting a Mac mini for my office and dumping my cumbersome
Win2K PC. My problem is that I use an off-site server for my work and I
connect via broadband using Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection utility.
I found Microsoft's version for the Mac OS X, but I would like to know if
anyone has experience iwth it. Does it work? Is it tempermental? I can't
afford too much downtime in making this type of transition. Any advice will
help. Thanks. Jay

It works quite well. No problems here (so far).

Thanks for the feedback. It would be nice to see it in action. Might have
to give the apple testdrive a try.

Works very well. If you already use RDC for Windows you'll find it is just
the same. There are differences in the keyboard layout but this hasn't
caused me a problem yet.

Despite what others have said, I use RDC a lot on the Mac, and
have had some problems with it under 10.4 until recently. One
of the updates blew it out of the water temporarily, and I could
not get it to connect to a 2K3 server (terminal services) at all
for a while, then another update came along and it started
working again. MS hasn't rev'd it in a while, not sure if they
care too much.

One other option, if you must have a backup just in case, is
take that Win2K box you plan on dumping, and install ubuntu
linux on it. The RDC client that comes with it works great too,
so that would give you two paths to your remote work, with zero
extra expense over the Mac you plan to buy already.

It used to work fine for me. Until my PC changed.

My new work PC (Windows XP sp2) refues to allow Remote Desktop to
attach. I'm mystified. Our IT guys here are even mystified (mind
you, they haven't spent all that much time on the issue since my
Mac is "non-supported equipment", so ultimately their answer has
to be, "why don't you just use your Windows box"....).

All the switches on the WIndows machine that are supposed to be
set, are set properly; but still something isn't working.

So -- it should work fine as long as you don't have mysterious
problems with the Windows computer you're attaching too...

That happened to me as well, but when I got the latest
10.4.whatever update about a week ago it started working again.

Re: OS X 10.4 compatibility with Microsoft Remote Destop Connection

Hmmm, so far it sounds something like what I expected and I'm not sure I
should take the leap. In this respect, Apple's test drive program sounds
enticing. But that doesn't answer what to do when it stops working in a
month or two because of a bad update or software incompatibility. It does
sound like the overall experience is positive though.

Also, thanks for the Linux suggestion. I hadn't thought of trying to access
the server via linux. I might try that (or something similar) to see what
problems arise -- just to play around at home.
