Skipping a bad file

Is there a way to copy a large folder of files from one drive to another,
and, if a bad file is encountered (bad media, let's say) you can just skip it
and continue? Presently, if a bad file is found, the whole process comes to
a halt.

My daughter's hard drive in her Compaq is ... well, it's a long story. I can
put it in an external FireWire enclosure and read it okay on my Mac. But
when I copy her "My Documents" folder, it get to 13 of 15 gigs, and then
fails.

I can, of course, do it a chunk at a time, but I was looking for a more
expeditious way. Just thinking out loud here ... may Retrospect could deal
with it....
