suddenly can't print

Hi,

While trying to print from BBEdit, I suddenly got an error message. In
two separate windows, I got:
Preparing
and, the scrolling bar and below it.

In another window was:
Print
Error while printing

I then tried from the terminal - same result.
From MS Word, I got the same.

From the original Tiger disk, I reloaded the the HP Printer stuff; I
have both a HP 5M and a color 5M.

Same result!!

I tried to "print as a pdf" and got the same result. Thus, it is deeper
than just the drivers for the laserjets!

Any ideas????

Thanks Larry

Try running the repair permissions utility in Disk Utility. If that does
not help, check your USB connections. If your printer is plugged into a
hub, the hub might have failed so try plugging the printer directly into
a USB port on your Mac.

I have more information. The program "Printer Setup Repair" did not fix
the problem. However, it did give me the following:

As you can see, the PSR program says that the file
"/private/etc/cups/ppds.dat" is missing. I've looked at my old Panther
disk, my most recent Tiger backup and the file does not exist in either!

I also tried my "Ghost in the Machine" user and could not print from
there either.

One other point: I thank Shawn for his suggestion, but I use Ethernet
for my connections.

Thanks Larry

While I can't determine the problem, I can tell you that the error message is
common. I have no printing problems, yet I get that error.

Did you, using Printer Setup Repair, try the various options to remove
printers? (Not the drivers, the printers.)
