Wandering desktop icons

Is there some way I can keep the desktop icons for my hard drives from
wandering around? I put them in the upper left corner and the next time I
boot up they're somewhere else. Even if I carefully remove all other icons
from the corner, Panther somehow decides to put them somewhere else. I mean,
WTF?

Sometime back I asked the same question in several mac newsgroups. No
one was able to give me a decent answer. One person asked me, why was I
bothered by the wandering hd icons. Good luck in getting a better answer.

In the Finder go to the View menu --> Show View Options --> Keep arrange
by ...

That should fix it.

That sort of works, but unless you do that action every so often, you
will find the HD icons start wandering around. I still want some script
which would fix, in place. my internal and external HDs,i n the upper
right corner of my screen, so that when I reboot my Mac I don't have to
hunt around for one or both HDs.

There are Applescript coders on the NG. Can some please write a simple
AS script that could do this job. TIA

In OS 9 the same problem exists. It seems to list the HD icons in
order by the system HD, then disks/partitions in order of how full
they are (ire how much free space is left). It seems that folders or
non HD icons will keep their position provided that the system prefs
(view prefs) are not set otherwise.

Re: Wandering desktop icons

Do you mean that the order in which the icons appear on the Desktop
keeps changing? Or that the icons keep moving to places other than the
upper right corner of your Desktop? Or maybe both or something else?

Frankly, I decided to dump the hard disks from my Desktop long ago and
am very happy to have the reclaimed space (especially with Panther's
ridiculous icon spacing).

Instead, what I found works much better: create a folder somewhere and
place aliases for all your disks into it. Then add the folder to the
Dock (you could also just add all the disks to the Dock, but that would
take up more room.

Why do I like this better?
a. Desktop is available for other things
b. You can Click-hold or Option-click on the dock icons and easily
navigate through the disks' directories. Can't do that with Desktop
icons.

In OS 9, there was an AppleScript that ordered the disk icons the same
way every time. Unfortunately the required syntax changed with X and I
didn't bother debugging. The Dock idea is much more practical and
easier...and independent of future AppleScript changes.

Rubbish. Once you select keep arranged by [date, name, kind, etc] the
hard disk icons remain in place until you deselect the option.

My dock is already too full. Seems to me you should be able to keep your
icons where you want them.
