| System won't boot: single user mode, getting something off the hard drive Hello, I have a G3 ibook running OS X 10.1.2. The OS will not boot correctly. Gets to the blue screen with the mac OS X progress bar, then the system hangs with progress bar a few %. Trying to recover some data off the hard drive. Can boot to single user mode. Can do "ls" commands and see all the data I want to get (can even "cat" the files and see that the info is really there). The questions I have: 1. Is there a way, in single user mode, to get any kind of storage device enabled (via firewire, usb, ethernet, etc.) to allow me to copy files off the hard drive? If so, how is the device referred to in single user mode (i.e. what's the syntax for "cp" command). 2. Is there any other boot level to get to, that would enable the network, to allow me to ftp files off this machine. 3. Is there any way to mount this crippled box to something else (i.e. a Windows PC) to get the information off. 4. Can anyone think of any other way to do this? Note that we have already tried the Mac recommended way (using Mac Geniuses help, which is connecting the machine to another Mac and trying to use a disk utility with the crippled machine in target user mode: result: the crippled drive doesn't show up in the disk utility). If there is a better forum to post to, please let me know, I didn't see an obvious one. Thanks in advance for any help Maria |

Did you start the crippled machine and hold the "T" key down while it was hooked up to the second computer using the Firewire ports? Good luck. -- Buzz life is too short to drink bad wine! |
