| Probs installing OS/X on a G3-400 I have a PowerMac G3-400 which I'm trying to install OS/X on. The disc I have is Mac OS version 10.2.7 (G5) I assume the "G5" means it's just what was bundled with the other computer since I've installed this on a G4 notebook. However, the system boots off the DVD and gives an error saying that "This computer is not compatible with this version of OS/X" I've seen plenty of threads here which state people have installed an even newer version than the one I have on G3s. Any idea what is wrong or what I need? Thanks. |

Thanks. You are trying to install the OS bundled with a G5 Mac onto a much older G3/400 system. The bundled Mac OS X CD's do not always contain all the bits of a Retail Mac OS X package. In your case, it is possible (I am guessing at this) that the installation CD is looking for the Altavec instructions that are not present in the G3. Or there is some other feature available in newer Macs that the G5 distribution CDs are expecting that your G3/400 lacks. I have run Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar), 10.3 (Panther), and 10.4 (Tiger) on my Blue & White G3/400 without any problems. However, I have always used Retail versions of Mac OS X to do the installations. And for Panther and Tiger I purchased the 5 license Family Pack so that I had the Right to install my copy on several systems. Bob Harris |
